Political Beliefs: A Philosophical Introduction with Oliver Traldi
Oliver Traldi is a postdoctoral fellow at the James Madison Program at Princeton University and an incoming professor at the Honors College of the University of Tulsa. I talked to Oliver about his recent book, Political Beliefs: A Philosophical Introduction, published by Routledge University Press. Oliver has chosen to forgo royalty payments in exchange for permission to make his book freely available online.
Oliver and I discussed a number of philosophical questions with implications for everyone who is keenly interested in politics. What do we mean when we describe something as political? How do we form our political beliefs? Why do those views tend to cluster around certain anchoring beliefs? Is the marketplace of ideas a good metaphor for the way in which we arrive at political opinions? Why is politics so adversarial and is that a good thing? How does identity figure into this? And why should we take an interest in politics at all? I hope you enjoy Oliver’s thoughtful musings on these and other topics, amid a wide-ranging conversation.

In Palestine today, there are three governments: Jordan, Israel and Gaza. The Muslims clearly own the vast majority of Palestinian lands; with Jordan alone occupying about 76% of pre- partitioned Palestine. The notion that a Palestinian Muslim state does not exist is to ignore reality

i don't understand how there could there be a peace movement from Yassir Arafat's people so early after the 1st Nakaba, its absolutely disgusting how they were bullied and pushed around. Yassir Arafat actually publicly accepted the existence of Isreal, and then they Mossad assasinated him? Crazy stuff!

  • @sdsa007

He said that rape occurred and babies were beheaded by Hamas, on Oct 7th but anti-zionists are saying that there is no evidence and that this is lie, this is propaganda... Also does the reaction to Oct 7th make sense? So insanely disporportionate... if children were not educated properly, or perhaps need a special kind of education to deal with grief from the 1st Nakbha, then wouldn't that be a specific issue with the PA's ministry of education? In the West, I never knew this term 'Nakbah'... only now I am hearing this term. Are you saying that the Right of Return is not an ancestral right? that people who self-identify with the Abrahamic religion have no right to the land of their ancestors, even to visit? I understand security risks related to disenfranchisment.... best I can figure both religions adapted to different ways of hating one another and invented a petty landlord capitialism in the desert as mad-max, war-profiters. From a humanist peace-loving point of view, I am ashamed of both religions, and I am especially ashamed of the investments in war-mongering in the USA during this time of climate change. It's disgusting that Israel by now cannot find peace, shame on Israel, Isreal has the support of the US to abide by the highest standards of warfare and Israel is murdering 1st-nakba-traumatized women and children using Killer AI called Lavender. I am disgusted. I am also horrified that Israeli security purposely pulled a 9/11 instead of protecting victims of the Holocaust. Why do you think imitating American strategies of Imperialism will gain you power and land? Is it because you are a mouth-peace of war-profittering? Isreal asassinated Yasir Arafat, and now you are saying you remember him as a war-monger? Yassir Arafat accepted the existence of Israel and this was supposed to be a starting point of a new modern religious life.... Instead, all we have now is bullshit, civil war, and everyone has to find a new religion.

when this hypocrite says that "Why I No Longer Support the Two-State Solution for Israel and Palestine" you need to understand that he is an extremist right winger that is not supporting this solution for more than 10 years. it is not because the 7th of October massacare he "changed his mind" this simply a fake. He supported the pro Hamas government leaded by the likud party and the center parties that believed in the mowing the loan agenda, that means killing the hamas leaders and other terrorist while using them as a tool to prevent any functional solution with the PLO

I remember my grandfather (who fought in WW2) talking about this when I was a child. We were watching TV, and news came on about one of the MANY times the Arabs attacked the Israelis. I believe it was the Yom Kippur war in 1973. He said that peace was impossible with people who still want to kill you 30 years later. I wonder what he would think about people who STILL don't get the message.... 70+ years after that first war in '48. It's good to see that many Israelis are finally waking up to reality.

With the skinks, that’s exactly what we’re trying to say! No, you’re not a skink, that’s true. But your brain changes in gestation and people are born trans. It’s in every cell of their body in too many different genes combined to count, just like any type of being LGBT. Current research says trans people who are MtF or FtM have similar brains to the gender they identify as. With being non-binary or outside the binary, it’s not the same type of research, but still. Our identity is feelings and thoughts because that’s how we experience our entire existence. We are not defined by facts because every person experiences things differently. Life is our perception because we have no way of seeing any other perception. We all have certain “core feelings” and “core values” that define who we are. We should be allowed to find them. That doesn’t mean there isn’t some moral right and wrong, but that our perception of how right and wrong affects us is something we have to realize ourselves. There is extreme individualism, but it’s been shown that those whose parents treated them as individuals instead of some arbitrary standard of “facts” and “rules” or “milestones” are healthier people for it. Yes, it’s a fact that biology is real. Trans people know they’re not changing their literal sex, and it’s disingenuous to argue about clownfish. But the biology in genes is also real, and it affects their brain.

Several IDF have come straight out and said there is uncontrolled killings...spontaneous killing and destruction of property..that IDF are now totally out of control in many areas. They have become nothing more than an avenging force of killers...women, children, anyone who comes across their path. This is, of course true in other conflicts as well. The Russian forces do as they want with the Civilian population in Ukraine.

They still ARE. They have done more to provide evacuation warnings than any army in history. Text messages, robocalls, leaflets, loudspeaker drones, roof knocking, etc. >>"anyone who comes across their path" Whose fault is that? Do realize that it's a war crime for an army to not wear uniforms to distinguish themselves from civilians? Hamas had these parades where they dress in their snazzy military uniforms.... then in combat, the cowards dress exactly like the civilians they're supposed to be protecting. After a few days of that hell, the IDF end up shooting that anything that moves.
